Caring for Engagement rings-What to Do

caring for engagement ringsThis is the first post in my two part engagement ring cleaning series and I want to talk about how you should go about keeping your ring clean. An ring is very expensive and it should be looked after with the utmost care. I have heard of people neglecting to care for their rings and in the end they became damaged and lost all value. I even know someone who bought a bezel set engagement ring for over 2000 dollars only to give it away for a messly 50 dollars 5 years later because it was so damaged.

So if you buy a ring here is what you should do:

  1. If you are going for a run, to the gym, for a swim or doing any sports whatsoever, take your ring off.
  2. Have one very safe place in your house where you keep your ring, rings are lost every year by people who have forgotten where they put them.
  3. Any work that requires the use of cleaning chemical agents or gardening chemicals etc should be avoided when wearing the ring. If you have to do it, take the ring off.
  4. Twice a year get your ring inspected by an appraiser and make sure your setting is not damaged and the ring is being properly cared for.
  5. Insure your ring. Dont skip this step because if anything happens to your ring you want to cut your losses, because remember it is a very valuable investment.

An engagement ring should be enjoyed, just make sure you protect it so the joy does not end up turning into sadness.
