In my humble opinion, contemporary refers to something which has become popular or was designed in the last 10 to 15 years. When it comes to dresses and fashion in general, something contemporary is very hard to define because everything changes so quickly. Colored diamonds are actually caused by impurities which make their colors, for a long time they were considered inferior to colorless diamonds for this very reason. However nowadays they are the most sought after diamonds of all and they have been a major part of contemporary engagement rings design. If you want a beautiful non traditional engagement ring, then I suggest choosing a color like black or brown, because it will be more affordable and easier to find than pink or yellow.

Moving completely away from tradition
To some couples, choosing a modern ring is choosing a very different path which would have been considered very strange a few years ago. Gothic engagement rings, celtic engagement rings, pearl engagement rings are all good examples of rings which are very contermporary.
