Vintage Engagement Rings

Vintage engagement rings are a fine choice for many couples after engagement rings which symbolize or resemble past styles and fashion trends.

What is vintage?

Many people get confused by the term vintage, because although they know it has something to do with the ‘old’ they don’t know how it differs from antique or estate. Well the term vintage encompasses antique, estate and replica. Still confused, let me explain further. Vintage engagement rings can be classified into the following types:

1)      Antique engagement rings- These are engagement rings which are 50 years or more older. These engagement rings are often passed down through generation as heirloom rings, they are also very popular among couples looking nostalgic about the past. There are many different styles of these type of engagement rings, among the most popular are art deco, Victorian and Edwardian. There are also many others.

2)      Estate engagement rings- Estate engagement rings are most often confused with antique engagement rings because they only real different is in their age. Estate engagement rings are those which have aged some years but have not reached the 50 year make to classified as antique.

3)      Replica antique engagement rings- replica antique engagement rings are actually those which have been made in an antique style, but which are new. Don’t confuse replica with fake or anything negative like that. The only real difference is in age, after 50 years these will become antiques themselves.

All of the above are vintage engagement rings, if you had any confusion, that should have helped.

Vintage styles

There are many different styles of vintage engagement rings but the most popular are the three below:

Victorian

These come from the age of Victoria when the British were by far the most dominant world power. These types of rings have come to symbolize the grandeur and splendor which British nobility was known for in those days.

Edwardain

Again this style is named after the reign of Edward, seen as a time when Britains influence began to wain, these are still seen as an embodiment of British wealth and grandeur.

Art deco

Are deco orginates from early 18th century Paris and with that it brings then sense of style and elegance that Paris (the city of romance) was known for in those days. If you are a true romatic then this may just be the ring you are looking for.

Price

The price of vintage engagement rings depends like all engagement rings on the quality of the stone(s) (carat, clarity, cut, type), on the setting and complexity or workmanship. However, unlike other types of engagement rings, age and history also play an important role in the pricing of a ring. For example a 100 year old vintage wedding ring with a history of being worn by a famous person would be worth much more than a replica ring made with the same quality materials.
